Springtime and New Beginnings: Our Autism Journey to a Group Home

It’s been two weeks since my son moved into his group home… and wow, what a shift. At first, I couldn’t sleep. The days felt like a fog—like that weird limbo when you’re stuck at an airport gate with no updates, or pacing a hospital hallway pretending the coffee tastes fine. That kind of tired. That kind of “what day is it?” feeling.

But then… I saw my Johnny. And my heart exhaled.

He was happy.

Not just “I’m okay” happy—but really happy. Glowing. Like he knew this was a good fit. He has his own room, his own space, his own routine. And most importantly? He finally has unlimited access to his iPad (his version of winning the lottery). He figured out how to press the “hungry” button on his device every other minute and doesn’t plan on stopping. It’s his voice—and he’s thrilled to be using it.

For him, this feels like freedom.

And for me? It’s the start of a new season.

He used to be in a residential setting with family visits in a separate trailer—sort of like we were on the outside looking in. But now? When I walk into the group home, it feels completely different. The last time I visited, there were three other parents, staff, kids, and a full kitchen bustling. It felt less clinical and more like home—warm, lived-in, welcoming. The kind of place where you can kick off your shoes and laugh a little louder.

Johnny’s settling in beautifully. He’s using his device to share his feelings (mostly about being hungry—he is very passionate about food), and I finally have access to his clothes and belongings again. Little things, but oh, how they matter.

The other families are lovely, and I’m slowly adjusting too. For so long, I felt like I was just waiting… praying for this placement to come through. And now that it has, it’s like walking into spring after a long, hard winter. Everything feels a little lighter.

We have a new Care Coordinator (I still keep calling her the Medicaid Coordinator—some habits just hang on), and we’re in dayhab mode now. I’m hopeful this will be a smooth transition too, and fingers crossed—we’ll get speech therapy going again soon.

This journey isn’t a wild rollercoaster anymore—it’s more like a changing season. There were months of waiting, some painful pruning, and long stretches where it felt like nothing was happening. But now? I see the first green buds. I feel the sun peeking through. 🌱

To my fellow special needs parents: I see you. I am you. As codependent as this life can feel, there comes a time when our kids need space—need independence in their own way—to begin to bloom. And guess what? We start to bloom again, too.

Here’s to fresh starts, warm spaces, and joy that shows up when we least expect it. Spring is here. And it feels like hope.
